NSW records 199 COVID-19 cases as Premier Gladys Berejiklian sets new vaccination target - ABC News

NSW must administer 6 million COVID-19 vaccinations by the end of August if there's any hope of easing Greater Sydney's lockdown, Premier Gladys Berejiklian says.

As the state recorded 199 new COVID-19 infections in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday, Ms Berejiklian warned authorities did not know if the state was through the worst of the current Delta outbreak.

The 6 million jabs would mean around 50 per cent of the state's adult population had been inoculated.

About 3.9 million doses have been put in arms in the state so far.

The current lockdown is due to end on August 29.

"We know that 10 million jabs gives us 80 per cent of the adult population vaccinated. By the end of August, I'd like to see NSW record 6 million jabs," Ms Berejiklian said.

"That gives us additional options as to what life looks like on 29 August."

Ms Berejiklian said NSW "should" reach the target by the end of August, based on its current rate.

She flagged some lockdown restrictions in Greater Sydney and its surrounds may be eased if NSW reached that target.

"We don't know if we've peaked or it's going to get worse," she said.

"We need everybody to work hard to get the case numbers down and also to get our vaccination rates as high as possible."

Of the new cases, 50 were infectious while in the community, while 32 were in the community for part of their infectious period.

The isolation status of 47 people remains under investigation.

"There's clearly been a plateauing the last week but we don't know if we'll see them worsen before they get better," Ms Berejiklian said.

The 199 new cases came from more than 104,536 tests.

There are 250 COVID-19 cases in NSW's hospitals, with 53 in intensive care, 20 of whom require ventilators.

Of the 53 people in intensive care, 43 were not vaccinated.

"Our data indicates that we are seeing more hospitalisations associated with the Delta strain," chief health officer Kerry Chant said.

Many of the new infections were recorded in the eight local government areas of concern in Sydney's west and south-west, and Dr Chant warned people not to travel into those areas unless they had to.

She warned the virus was creeping into the surrounding LGAs of Strathfield, Burwood, Camden, Inner West, Penrith and Bayside.

Ms Berejiklian said offering people incentives to get vaccinated would not be ruled out by her government.

"We're focusing on what we believe people want at this stage," she said.

"They want peace of mind that they can move more freely, send their kids to school, work.

"So any incentives around those things we think are great motivators so we're looking at those options."
