Victoria records 15 new local cases as South Melbourne Market listed as COVID-19 exposure site - The Age

Victoria has recorded 15 new local cases of COVID-19 as health authorities declared a large inner-city market an exposure site after a positive case visited several stalls during a busy trading day last Saturday.

Eleven of the new local cases have been linked to previously reported cases and four are mystery cases. Seven people had been in the community while infectious, according to the daily health department tweet.

Health authorities also reported more than 40,000 test results in the past 24 hours and administered more than 20,000 vaccine doses. There are a total of 148 active cases in Victoria.

The figures come as a fruit and vegetable stall and a deli were added to the state’s exposure site list as tier-1 venues, all located within South Melbourne Market after a person with COVID-19 visited last Saturday.

The Fish Shoppe, Small Town Pie Co, Emerald Hill Nursery, Vangelis Deli, Fruits on Coventry, Haqen’s Organics and Rita’s Coffee & Nuts are the venues named as tier-1 sites.

The entire market has also been listed as a tier 2 exposure site and is closed. “The market is undergoing a thorough clean this evening and is working with the DHHS to ensure we will be able to open as soon as possible,” a market statement said.

Anyone who visited the affected stalls between 1:30pm and 2:20pm on Saturday, August 7, is required to get a COVID-19 test and isolate for 14 days.

Meanwhile, Victoria’s coronavirus exposure site list has now surged past 400 sites.

Moonfish Albert Park and Gum Tree Good Food Middle Park have also been listed as tier 1 exposure sites.

Prince Wine Store and Bellota Wine Bar in South Melbourne and Bread Club in Albert Park were also added to the list as tier 2 sites.

Victorian AMA wants hospital staff better supported

Melbourne’s public hospital system is under pressure due to the rising number of exposure sites, according to Victorian AMA president Dr Roderick McRae.

Dr McRae wants support in place to better retain hospital staffing levels when some workers are potentially exposed to COVID-19 while out and about in the community.

“One of the difficulties is that a lot of the staff in the public hospitals, in the emergency departments, in the general wards, all live around the vicinity of the various hospitals,” he told Today on Friday.

“So, if they go to the shopping centre, where these mystery people are spreading, transmitting the virus, then they get their message from the health authorities and they are furloughed, they stay at home for their 14-day quarantine.”

Dr McRae said there needed to be a better system in place to ensure adequate staffing.
