Two people have died and two others are in a critical condition after a landslip in NSW's Blue Mountains today.
NSW Police said a man and a boy have died while a woman and a boy are in a critical condition and are being treated at the scene.
Acting Superintendent John Nelson said five people were bushwalking when the landslip happened.
"There were five people that were bushwalking, unfortunately there has been a landslip while they have been bushwalking," he said.
"As a result of that there has been a police operation that is in process as we speak. That is a rescue and recovery operation.
"Unfortunately, today as part of that landslide there has been a man and a boy who have passed away."
Acting Superintendent Nelson was unable to say if the people involved are related.
NSW Ambulance Acting chief superintendent Stewart Clarke said a woman was now walking out from the scene of the accident, in what he said had been "a heartbreaking experience" for everyone concerned.
He said the woman and boy had been treated at the scene after suffering significant head and abdominal injuries, and it is expected they will soon be winched out from the scene by helicopter and taken to the nearest hospital.
Mr Clarke said it's believed someone in the group or someone nearby called Triple 0 and he could not confirm that the group are tourists.
He described the rescue operation by paramedics as "extremely dangerous" in extremely unstable conditions.
Paramedics have been winched down to the site in dense bushland.
