An 18-year-old man has been refused bail after being charged over a crash that killed five teenagers in Buxton, south-west of Sydney.
Tyrell Edwards faced five counts of dangerous driving occasioning death when he appeared in Picton Local Court today.
The magistrate said the decision to deny the green P plate driver bail was "not made easily" after the court heard his licence had been suspended twice in the last two years for speeding offences.
The court also heard there is footage of the lead up to the crash in which the Nissan ute went off the road and hit a tree on Tuesday evening.
His five teenage passengers died at the scene.
Lily van de Putte, 15, was killed alongside two 14-year-old girls, a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy.
Four of the teens cannot be named for legal reasons.
All of the victims were students at Picton High School.
The court heard Edwards is "significantly traumatised" and is in need of psychiatric treatment.
He was arrested on Wednesday after being released from hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
A community shattered
Wollondilly Shire Mayor Matt Gould told Today that the deaths have had a profound impact on the community.
"There are a lot of people across the shire that are hurting. Particularly some of our younger kids," he said.
"A lot of kids are having a hard time processing it. They just need a bit of space."
Gould urged people to take advantage of the "additional support" being offered through the high school and the council.
"We're having, today you can see behind me a barbecue for R U OK? Day," he said.
"We're inviting anybody in the community who wants to come up and get a free breakfast and have a chat."
Earlier, NSW Police Detective acting Inspector Jason Hogan said Edwards had returned a negative alcohol breath-test at the scene, but results for his mandatory tests were still incoming.
Police earlier said the Nissan Navara was only a four-seater vehicle.
