Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has categorically ruled out introducing a "mining tax" after calls to spread the profits of resource companies to workers' wages.
Former Hawke government economic adviser Ross Garnaut, a speaker at the jobs summit in Canberra, last night called for a new mining tax amid record high commodity prices.
But Albanese ruled out any new tax on mining giants when he spoke with Today this morning.
"No, that's not on the agenda but it is a good thing that people are able to put forward ideas and Ross Garner, of course, is someone of great experience."
Garnaut said high commodity prices should be used to deliver budget surpluses, instead of high levels of public debt.
The previous Labor government introduced a controversial mining tax in 2010, triggering a major public campaign by giant mining companies.
