Renters "won't forgive" Labor for failing to bring in a rent cap, Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather has told hundreds of protesters at the ALP's national conference in Brisbane.
This week rallies have been a fixture outside the Brisbane Convention Centre, where the ALP is holding its first conference in government since former prime minister Julia Gillard.
The Griffith MP, who describes himself as a "lifelong renter", said it was a "shot across the bow" for Labor, who this week announced it would reactivate its Help to Buy scheme, as well as a national target of 1.2 million new homes over five years.
Mr Chandler-Mather said this won't deliver for renters.
"This week Labor abandoned renters and locked in unlimited rent increases, and people aren't going to forgive them for that," Mr Chandler-Mather said.
'The Australian dream'
Labor meets every three years to hash out its platform for the years ahead. This year housing was top of its agenda.
Announcing the scheme's return, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had invoked the Australians "who have done all the right things" but for whom ownership — the "Australian dream" — was still out of reach.
He said the "best way" to make sure Australians have safe and affordable homes, is to boost housing supply.
LoadingThe Greens have refused to get behind the government's $10 billion housing future fund, which next goes to a vote on October 16.
Mr Chandler-Mather said the party had "bent over backwards" for a deal, and "will press as hard as it can" before it is re-introduced.
"It's not sustainable for Labor to tell the one third of this country who rents to go jump, and spit in their faces and tell them and they have to cop unlimited rent increases at a period where rents are going up at the fastest rate in 35 years," he said.
In April, the Greens said they would support the legislation only if it included rent caps and freezes and $2.5 billion towards "public, community and affordable housing".
'F for failure'
The Greens' former leader Bob Brown was also rallying outside — but against logging in Tasmania.
"It's 'f' for failure on fauna. It's 'f' for failure on fossil fuels," he said.
"This is a shameful prime minister when it comes to the environment. This is a negligent government when it comes to the environment."
Activists also gathered to protest development at protected wetlands at Toondah Harbour, near Brisbane.
