A child has been killed in a horror accident at a Sydney school for children with disabilities.
Emergency services were called to St Lucy’s School on Cleveland Street in Wahroonga at 2pm following reports a child was trapped.
“Officers attached to Kuring-Gai Police Area Command arrived to find a 10-year-old boy trapped under a lift,” a police statement said.
Firefighters attempted to rescue the boy from where he was trapped but he died at the scene.
The school confirmed the child’s death in a statement, with the premises to remained closed for the forseeable future.
“St Lucy’s School is very sad to confirm the tragic death of one of our students this afternoon,” the statement read.
“We are cooperating with investigating police and are not able to make any further statement today.
“The school will be closed to students until further notice.
“We ask for privacy and space for our staff and families to grieve at this difficult time as we remember our beautiful student.”
Police have set up a crime scene and are continuing a recovery operation for the child’s body.
The school was placed into lockdown in the wake of the incident, and it’s understood that the boy’s parents have been notified.
A NSW Police spokesperson says a report will be prepared for the coroner.
The school offers education to students with a wide range of disabilities including “mild to severe intellectual disability, autism and sensory impairments”, according to its website.
St Lucy’s started with a primary school before expanding in 2019 to include secondary education, commencing with two year 7 classes.
St Lucy’s School is an independent Catholic Special School which is part of the Mission of Dominican Education Australia.
