Opposition accuses PM of being ‘weak’ on support for Israel amid hostage release - Sky News Australia

The federal opposition has accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of being “weak” on Israel, as the Israeli government confirmed the second group of hostages to be released by Hamas is now safely in Egypt.

Shadow attorney-general Michaelia Cash said the release of hostages was “incredibly welcome news” before noting the ceasefire was only temporary and “Israel must defend itself”.

“Obviously the fighting will resume again, But what we always have to remember, is why we're in this situation,” Senator Cash said.

“There was an unprovoked attack by Hamas on Israel. They slaughtered innocent Israelis. So everything that is now occurring is at the foot of Hamas.

“They are responsible for this, and Israel must defend itself.”

Senator Cash said the Prime Minister had been “weak” in responding to the October 7 terrorist attacks because Labor was “internally divided” on the appropriate response to the conflict.

“Our prime minister as leader of our country, should have come out and strongly condemned Hamas and backed Israel's right to defend itself,” she said.

“But the Prime Minister, he was weak in that regard,” she said.

“On day one Australians did not know where the Prime Minister stood they did not know here the foreign minister sought stood. You cannot have it both ways in relation to this debate.”

“And I talked to Jewish people all over Australia… and they continue to express real disappointment in how the Prime Minister initially handled this matter.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong was recently criticised when she said that the government wanted to see both sides of the conflict take “steps towards a ceasefire”, with Jewish groups saying this would effectively amount to a “victory for Hamas”.

Senator Cash also accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of failing to condemn Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi, who on Friday posted a photo with students at a pro-Palestine student rally, one of whom was holding a sign showing an Israeli flag being put into a bin alongside the words "keep the world clean".

“Again, where was the Prime Minister condemning green Senator Mehreen Faruqi recently for her despicable post on social media,” Senator Cash said.
