A man who was fatally shot in the driveway of his Melbourne home on Tuesday was found by a member of his family, police said.

Police said Latorre, who had suspected links to the Calabrian mafia, was approached by an unknown person or persons as he walked out of his garage.

He was shot in the upper body an unknown number of times and died at the scene.

Latorre was discovered in his driveway by a member of his family, who heard the gunshot.

Police said the shooting was a targeted attack.

Detective senior sergeant Danny Travaglini said police were unsure how the shooter or shooters left the scene, but were speaking with neighbours and canvassing the area for CCTV.

He said the family members who were home at the time were “very distraught”.

“It’s certainly concerning, any incident such as this is quite concerning,” Travaglini said.

Latorre was a prominent businessman and the co-owner of Latorre Fresh Produce.

It’s believed he was preparing to leave his home for the Epping fruit market when he was shot.

Travaglini said Latorre was known to police, but did not elaborate how.

He could not confirm if the incident was related to organised crime, saying there was nothing to suggest any acts of retaliation at this stage.

Police are handling the case as a “high-priority” in the event the shooting was gang related, Travaglini said.

“You gotta understand if there are links to organised crime, there’s always the potential of retaliation,” he said.

“That’s where Victoria Police approach ... such investigations as a high priority, for those reasons.”

One neighbour told 7NEWS he was “shocked” at what had happened.

“I’m surprised,” he said.

“I wake up in the morning and (you’re) not allowed to move your car.”

Anyone with CCTV or who was driving in the area at the time and has dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
