A tradie burnt his car then went to work after a fatal hit-and-run, police have alleged.
Joshua Alexander Scott, 35, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday charged over an alleged hit-and-run that claimed the life of 75-year-old Ian Colwell while he was crossing a road on his morning walk.
Police allege Mr Scott was driving a gold Honda CR-V on his way to work when he ran a red light and hit the elderly man at the corner of Kittyhawk Dr and Murphy Rd in Chermside about 5.15am on Thursday.
Mr Collwell suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where died a short time later.
Police allege Mr Scott left the scene then abandoned the vehicle and set it on fire along a street in Wavell Heights.
Detectives found Mr Scott about 2km away from the burnt-out vehicle at a property in Geebung at 10am.
He was taken into custody and charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of an incident without obtaining help, endangering property by fire and arson.
Queensland Police detective senior sergeant Ken Rogers said Mr Scott had borrowed the car from someone he knew.
“He drove around for a short time and decided to burn the vehicle out and then, believe it or not, went to work,” he alleged.
He further alleged the driver told officers he panicked and did not know what to do when he realised he had hit Mr Colwell.
Anyone with information, including relevant vision, is urged to contact police.
Mr Scott is due to reappear in court on April 15.
