‘Screaming, crying’: Horror on Aussie street - news.com.au

A man has been charged with murder over the alleged stabbing death of 22-year-old Mauwa Kizenga on the streets of Perth.

Ms Kizenga, also known as Melanie, was walking with her cousin in Balga, a suburb of the WA capital when a man, aged 30, allegedly attacked her with a knife.

Emergency workers treated her at the scene and then transported her to Royal Perth Hospital, but her injuries were too severe.

The man charged with her murder will face court on Monday.

A security camera caught Ms Kizenga and her cousin walking along a footpath at 8:11pm on Saturday night, moments before the alleged attack outside Balga Primary School, another 100 metres up the road.

Onlookers, witnessing the incident, rushed to Ms Kizenga’s side and tried to stem the bleeding with a pair of socks, which were later seen being taken as evidence by police.

Members of the public chased the man and cornered him, forcing him to drop the alleged murder weapon.

“They stopped him in the corner there, and they’re saying, ‘Drop the knife. Drop the knife.’ He wouldn’t drop the knife. So they knocked it out of his hands,” a witness told 9 News.

Police said the 30-year-old man was taken into custody “nearby” the site of the incident at about 8.04pm.

“The investigation remains ongoing at this time,” WA Police said.

“It is believed the man may be known to a second woman, aged in her 20s, who was in company with the 22-year-old woman at the time of the incident.”

“It appears to be a violent and completely unprovoked attack,” Detective Senior Sergeant Katharine Venn told the media.

“We don’t have the motive for that at this time.”

WA Police said the alleged assailant and Ms Kizenga’s companion may have “been known to each other”.

“Everyone deserves to be able to walk safely on our streets,” said Sgt SVenn.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the friends and to the family of the poor young woman who passed away.”

While she applauded the bravery of onlookers who ultimately disarmed and subdued the suspect, Sgt Venn stressed that police “would not encourage” civilians to “try to disarm people armed with knives”.

“They could have harmed themselves,” she noted.

Witnesses, and friends of Ms Kizenga, have spoken of their shock at the tragedy.

“She was very bad. They were working on her, and then her friend was just screaming and crying and everything,” said witness Lisa Rance.

“It was very horrible to see.”

Martha Pommet, who had known Ms Kizenga for a decade, told The West Australian she was a “very caring” person.

“She was very, very caring. The relationship that we had was very unique. She was like a twin,” Ms Pommett told the newspaper.

“We just had funny times together, a lot of moments in our rooms where we would laugh and talk and tell each other our secrets.

“I’ve never met anyone like her, and I just miss her so much.”
