Twenty-one prisoners at Darwin's adult prison escaped their cells and climbed to the roof of "multiple accommodation areas" overnight, sparking a four-hour standoff with authorities.

NT Police were called to the incident at the Holtze prison, in Darwin's outer suburbs, about 9pm on Wednesday after the prisoners managed to climb onto the roof.
It is not known how the prisoners escaped, or their reasons for causing the disturbance.
Tactical response and general duties police officers were deployed to monitor the perimeter at Darwin Correctional Centre, while corrections officers dealt with the incident inside the prison grounds.
Structure fire at the scene
An Attorney-General and Justice Department spokeswoman said additional staff were called in to support the team.
St John Ambulance and Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene, after a structure fire was reported about 9:30pm.
