Autistic teen missing near Port Stephens found at Katoomba - Sydney Morning Herald

A teenage boy who went missing at Heatherbrae, near Port Stephens, on Tuesday night has been found after he attended his school in the Blue Mountains on Wednesday morning.

The boy made his way back to his school at Katoomba this morning, NSW Police said.

Superintendent Chad Gillies from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District told Ray Hadley on 2GB on Wednesday morning that it is believed the 13-year-old, who likes public transport, hitch-hiked and caught a train to make the 240-kilometre journey.

"The young fella had managed to get his way to Katoomba to his school," he said.

"He's quite resourceful."

Police were called and a search conducted after 10.30pm on Tuesday when the boy, who has autism, walked off from the Heatherbrae Pies carpark and did not return. The search recommenced on Wednesday morning.

The boy was travelling south on the Pacific Highway from the north coast to the Blue Mountains when he and his mother pulled into the carpark for a rest.

It comes as a young teen with non-verbal autism has been missing for more than 36 hours in dangerously cold conditions in bushland north of Melbourne.

The search for William Callaghan continued through its second night on Tuesday, as temperatures in the area dropped to 4.9 degrees. More than 450 people, including hundreds of volunteers, have been searching for the 14-year-old.

William disappeared about 2.20pm on Monday when he ran ahead of his father as they trekked to the Mount Disappointment summit, 10 kilometres east of Wallan.

"We've had people searching 24 hours for the last couple of days and a lot of people out in the field," Senior Sergeant Greg Paul told Nine's Today on Wednesday.

Crews have been using different techniques to try and find William, including playing Thomas the Tank Engine over PA systems.
