Victorian Chief Medical Officer Brett Sutton warns the state is "right at the edge' of being able to control the current coronavirus outbreak in Melbourne.

Professor Sutton said as restrictions eased in other parts of Australia, it was becoming more difficult to tell Victorians they needed to live a more "restrained" life.

No ETA yet on an update from Victoria

any word of when we are hearing from anyone in Victoria?

-Sharna

My Victorian colleagues tell me that we'll be getting updates a little later in the day this week Sharna. It's because of the huge testing blitz that Victoria has launched, which means there's a lot more data to wade through before there's a public update. As soon as I have a more specific time, you folks will be the first to know

I got tested on a Wednesday In VIC and am still waiting to hear my result. At what point should I go for another test or call to see if they’ve lost it? I’ve had to cancel work today and am worried that I’ll have to get retested and take the whole week off waiting. I don’t have symptoms anymore but obviously can’t leave home till I have a result.

-Lost Test

I’ve been waiting 5 days for my test result (VIC). Do you have any idea how long the turn around time is at the moment?

-Waiting

Probably best to call your GP or the clinic where you got tested to follow up on these. I'll ask our Victorian team to dig into this one, but the sheer volume of tests being done in Victoria right now could have something to do with it. Good call to not leave home until you get a result Lost Test!

Hi Peter, you sound depressed and Brett Sutton looks worried and exhausted. Not a good way to start the week, that's for sure.

-Deb

Nah I'm doing fine Deb! I was just pointing out the obvious. I love hanging out here with all of you, but I'd much rather not have a reason to blog because coronavirus was on its way to being a distant memory. I imagine Brett Sutton is worried and exhausted at the moment though, it's not an easy job being a CMO in the middle of a pandemic.

Those swabs tests will be here for a while yet

ABC News

I've thankfully not had the pleasure of getting a test for coronavirus yet, but anyone who has will tell you the current standard swab test isn't very pleasant.

Melbourne's Doherty Institute is in the trial stages of using a new saliva test, and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says the less invasive procedure could be particularly helpful to test young children.

This morning the New South Wales government said that it'll keep using the swab tests for now.

Here's what's back on the agenda for SA from today:

  • Pub gaming areas, spas and saunas able to reopen
  • Physical distancing requirements inside venues will halve
  • South Australians will also be able to enjoy a drink at the bar and a seated meal in a food court

Victoria 'right at the edge' of coronavirus outbreak

ABC News

Victoria's Chief Medical Officer Brett Sutton has delivered a pretty sobering assessment of the situation this morning. Here's what he told RN:

"I think it's a genuine challenge now. I think we're right at the edge in terms of being able to manage it. As three-quarters of the country goes back to an ordinary way of living, it becomes even more challenging to tell people that it's not the same here and they've got to go on with a more constrained life."

Professor Sutton said that there had been more cases in the community in Melbourne because of the larger number of international flights that land at Melbourne airport.

Good morning

Hey there everyone. Peter Marsh here.

I'd say it's good to be back hanging out with you all but - let's be honest - if we had this coronavirus situation under control there'd be no need for me to be here.
Still, it's nice to at least hang out with all you folks again.

I'll be on deck this morning to bring you the latest coronavirus news from the outbreaks in Victoria, and we'll run through some of the major international news that's been happening while we've all been snoozing.

As always, thanks for reading along.
