The 34-year-old father-of-three received burns to 98 percent of his body as he worked to save 13 people trapped inside a holiday home in Tyaak, Victoria, as it burnt to the ground on Saturday night.

The man desperately tried save his son - who had only just celebrated his sixth birthday last month - but he was tragically killed in the blaze along with a close family friend, aged 33.

The injuries the hero sustained while working to save the lives of others were too severe for him to survive.

He died less than 24 hours after his son, at The Alfred Hospital on Sunday night, donating his organs in a final act of kindness.

His wife, who underwent surgery for her injuries, was by her husband's side in his final moments.

The couple's other two young sons were among four children - all aged under six - who were still fighting for their lives in the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, on Monday.

The hospital has stopped providing updates on the status of the children at the request of the family, so it is unknown if their condition has improved.

The 10 other people in the house at the time of the blaze all received injuries to varying degrees.

It is understood the families were on a group holiday for the long weekend in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions being lifted.

The country property, owned by the extended family for two decades, had allowed the families to ride horses, play in the garden and ride their bikes.

The home, which was described by the families as a 'house built up with beautiful memories of family gatherings', was destroyed by the inferno.

The three families affected by the tragedy released a heartbreaking statement on Monday, speaking of their devastation.

'Our families are heart-broken over the tragedy that happened on the weekend, we are still dealing with the devastation in our own time,' the statement said.

'The people we lost were loving, beautiful members of our families, they were extremely loved and always there for anybody who needed them.

A family friend told the Herald Sun that the extended family was inconsolable.

They described the father as family-oriented, with a great sense of humour, and said the family had been hoping to have a fourth child, this time a girl.

'He always looked after the people around him ... he was just a kind, caring bloke,' the friend said.

The father, his six-year-old son and their close family friend died after a fire ripped through the four-bedroom holiday home in central Victoria on Saturday night.

Fire crews were called to Cunninghams Road in Tyaak, an hour north of Melbourne, just before midnight on Saturday where they found the house engulfed with flames.

The six-year-old boy and the 33-year-old family friend were both found dead inside the home.

Eleven others were taken to hospital, one of whom - the father - died on Sunday.

The couple's two other young sons remain in the Royal Children's Hospital where they are being treated for their injuries.

They are among four children, aged between one and five years, who remained in a critical condition at the hospital on Monday.

Up to 15 Country Fire Authority crews rushed to the out-of-control fire which took more than two hours to extinguish.

The house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

A CFA spokesman said the entire house had been impacted by the fire and there was 'quite extensive damage'.

A fireplace in the home was used every fortnight during winter and was said to be well-maintained.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious, but detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.
