The brother of a 20-year-old art student will remain behind bars after he was charged with his younger sister's murder.

Lucas Delaney, 30, was arrested on Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after the body of his sister Gabriella was found inside a townhouse their shared near Penrith.

Police believe Ms Delaney's body had been inside the home for several days.

Lawyer for Mr Delaney, Shelby Van Ooran, said he had chosen not appear on screen at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday. He did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused.

Court documents state that he is accused of the "murder (domestic violence)" of Gabriella Delaney on June 3.

He is next scheduled to appear at Penrith Local Court on August 7.

Officers were called to a residential property in Cambridge Park on Monday night, after they received a call from the siblings' parents, who live in Western Australia.

They had a serious concern for Ms Delaney's welfare, because she had not been seen or heard from since June 3.

On Tuesday police arrested her brother at a western Sydney mental health facility, where Mr Delaney had admitted himself in the days since Ms Delaney is believed to have died.

He was subsequently charged with murder (domestic violence).

On Tuesday Detective Inspector Jason Pietruszka said the Cambridge Park property was part of a unit complex where a number of people lived, including the woman's brother.

Forensic officers spent most of the day examining the townhouse, a process made more complex due to the length of time Ms Delaney is believed to have been inside the apartment.

"Police have described the scene as very confronting ... regarding a cause of death, we will be relying on the pathologist and the coroner," Detective Inspector Pietruszka said.
