Widespread search for missing autistic boy near Whittlesea - Herald Sun

The frantic search for a missing autistic boy at Mt Disappointment continues.

Concern is growing for the wellbeing of William Callaghan, 14, who has now been missing for more than 16 hours.

The temperature in the area north of Melbourne dipped to 0C overnight.

The search effort will be increased as daylight breaks.

Dozens of desperate volunteers combed the Mt Disappointment region overnight for traces of the boy without success.

“There is every man and his dog out here,” one searcher said.

Another man involved in the search said the terrain was “very thick bush”.

William was last seen at around 2.20pm on Monday afternoon, on the south side of the summit before he became separated from his family.

Police said he is not dressed adequately for the cold conditions and has no food or water.

He is wearing navy trackpants, a long sleeve striped T-shirt and a navy jumper.

William’s family has told Victoria Police that he is quite energetic and believe he might have covered quite a lot of distance on foot.

They also say he is also food orientated, and think he may be looking for a way into a house with the door unlocked for some food.

“He could go inside, walk up to the fridge or cupboard to get something to eat, and then put himself to bed,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

Victoria Police are asking people in the vicinity to check their spare rooms and homes in case he has found his way inside.

The Police Airwing, Search and Rescue Squad, Dog Squad, local uniform members in 4WD’s and police on bikes are also being supported by the State Emergency Services in searching for William.

Victoria Police are urging anyone with information, or anyone who sees him to call triple-0 (000).
