NSW lifesavers are fine-tuning safety measures ahead of summer
New South Wales lifesavers say the warm weather across the holiday long weekend has provided a chance to fine-tune high-tech safety measures ahead of summer.
Beaches have been packed, but authorities say crowds have generally been well behaved and COVID 19 rules have been observed.
Joel Wiseman from New South Wales Surf Lifesaving says 21st century equipment is helping make beaches safer, both in and out of the water.
"Our drones are up in the air and we're providing numbers constantly back to our new state of the art ops centre, we've got cameras at over 40 locations across the state and we've got artificial intelligence into some of the CCTV cameras that actually does crowd counts," he said.

Professor Sutton says it will be 'line ball' whether Melbourne makes the 14-day average threshold
Professor Sutton was asked whether he thought Melbourne would be able to get the 14-day rolling average below five cases per day before October 19.
This was the threshold needed to move to Step Three of eased restrictions.
Professor Sutton told reporters this morning it would be a very close call.
"My gut feel … it will be a line ball. Look, it's not a certain one way or the other," he said.

Some of your comments from this morning
Michael the update on Dan Andrews' jacket is exceptional and I really do thank you for that. It's the news that i really didn't know that I needed.-Grateful and informed
It's very hard to overstate how absolutely devastating it will be if the 5km rule doesn't change in the next set of restrictions. For many of us that is the thing that has prevented us from seeing friends and family for more than three months. I don't know how much longer we can hold out. I want to cry just thinking about it.-MKM
I've followed the rules since March, and I'll keep following until they are gone, but I am so tired. Why can't they ease the 5k rule? Their roadmap said they would.... It doesn't make sense, to not ease that rule with the other things coming in at step 3......-Nancy
For the sanity of all those that live in the Melbourne Metro area lift the 5 KLM limit-Paul H
I’m just here to say that I’m following Brett Sutton’s beard progress with serious interest. How is he continuing to get even more handsome? What a delight.-Get on the beards

Daniel Andrews ducks questions on his jacket
Premier Daniel Andrews was asked (in jest of course) about where his North Face Jacket has gone.
He has not worn it in a number of weeks.
The Premier says he has not given it a lot of thought.
Weather experts say Summer is hotter than Winter, so this could be bad news for the jacket in 2020.
There is no word about how the jacket feels about this snub.

How has the Chadstone case been able to spread its tentacles so far not just across the south-east but into the Mitchell Shire?
Professor Sutton answered a common question on the blog:
It does relate to the fact that any worker has family members and they can transmit to those family members when symptomatic but before they are symptomatic. Those family members are in essential work industries as well and go to those work sites.
Those workers, you would hope, are all wearing masks but again to the degree that compliance isn't in place or that people drop their guard then there can be transmission within workplaces as well.
Those workplace colleagues have household and family members as well and on it goes.

What happens if Melbourne does not hit the five-cases-a-day threshold?
Professor Sutton said:
We do have to meet the thresholds. The mystery cases in particular is a really important one to meet.
The successful jurisdictions internationally in Australia have gotten to five or fewer cases in a 14-day period when they've been able to maintain control into the long-term.
Places that have haven't met that threshold have not been able to do that.
So that's an important one. With respect to the five average per day, we've always said that we need to look at what those cases are.
If the outbreak numbers are part of that 14-day average that we get to on October 18 or 19, we will look at exactly how well that's controlled.
