18 Australians on 10 planes involved in Qatar airport strip-search, Marise Payne says - ABC News

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne says women on 10 different aircraft at a Doha airport were subjected to invasive internal examinations by Qatari authorities earlier this month.

Ms Payne told a parliamentary hearing 18 Australian women were involved.

The examinations occurred after a newborn premature baby was found in a terminal bathroom at Hamad International Airport on October 2.

The baby survived and was given medical care.

The Australian Government has formally registered its "serious concern" with Qatar, arguing the treatment was "offensive" and "grossly inappropriate".

One female passenger told the ABC she was with a group of about six women taken to ambulances for examinations.

"When I got in [the ambulance], there was a lady with a mask on and then the authorities closed the ambulance [door] behind me and locked it," the woman said.

More to come.
