A sea of red has swung Labor’s way early in the Queensland election count, with incumbent Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk stealing ground from the LNP in key electorates.
Labor needs just 47 seats to form a majority government and hold power for another four years, with its former powerbroker Graham Richardson saying he expects the party to soar past the magic number.
“I expect (Labor) to pick up more than 50 seats,” Mr Richardson declared on the Sky News election coverage panel.
Even Campbell Newman, who served as premier of the Sunshine State, conceded the election appears lost for his former LNP colleagues.
“Sadly, I don’t think we’re going to have victory tonight,” he said.
“It’s not going to be our night,” before admitting the result appears “bleak”.
Labor has swung ahead in Aspley, Barron River, Gaven, Mansfield, Maryborough, and Redlands.
Key battle grounds in the state’s north, Townsville and Mundingburra, are showing signs of being retained by Labor.
The blue ribbon seat of Clayfield has also swung to the red, a result commentator Alan Jones described as “extraordinary”.
Early results show former Labor Minister Jackie Trad on track to lose her inner-city seat of South Brisbane.
There has been a 10 per cent swing towards the Greens, who are represented by Amy MacMahon.
The LNP may be in trouble in Pumicestone, north of Brisbane, while the traditional blue ribbon seat of Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast could also be at risk.
Retiring Labor Minister Kate Jones’ former seat of Cooper could also go to the Greens.
With 25 per cent of the vote counted, the Greens have a primary vote of 34 per cent, compared to Labor’s 32.8.
Labor has also positioned itself as an overwhelming favourite with the bookies.
Sportsbet’s odds have tightened to $1.08, while the LNP’s chances of winning a majority government have blown out to $7.50.
