While Melburnians emerge for their months-long lockdown, the French are heading back inside.
It's currently 12.30am, Friday, in Paris. Just several hours ago people were in bars and restaurants having their last drinks before France enters a month-long lockdown in a desperate bid to stem surging coronavirus cases.
Global cases pass 44.8 million
While we wait for the Victorian Premier's press conference, let's take a look at the global figures according to Johns Hopkins University this morning.
Tens of thousands of COVID-19 cases are now emerging in Europe each day, with the global tally now passing 44.8 million, while the death toll has exceeded 1.1 million.
About a month ago (on September 21) the number of cases worldwide was 30.8 million and the death toll was just over 958,000.

Berejiklian 'disappointed' if Qld reopens to regional NSW, but not Sydney
By Mary Ward
Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she will be disappointed if her Queensland counterpart does not announce she will reopen the Sunshine State to all NSW residents later today.
Ms Berejiklian said she understood Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's news "might be an announcement regarding regional NSW". (It's worth noting Ms Palaszczuk is vying for re-election when Queensland residents head to the polls tomorrow.)
"I'm disappointed: there's no reason why NSW residents shouldn't be allowed in every part Australia," Ms Berejiklian said.
The Premier repeated her statements from earlier this week and throughout the pandemic that hard border closures are "extremely unfair" and "lack logic and common sense".
"If I had my way you wouldn't have any borders in Australia, but for Victoria," she said, adding she was confident her team would know when the Victorian border could be reopened in two weeks' time.
"If the health experts give us the tick we will be moving quickly," she said.
Victorian budget to be handed down on November 24
Another announcement this morning, this time from the Victorian government.
The Victorian budget will be handed down on November 24.
There had been some speculation the budget would be delivered on the same day the hotel quarantine inquiry released its final report into the botched scheme, providing a convenient distraction for the Andrews government, but the inquiry's findings will not be made public for nearly two months.
On Wednesday, Premier Daniel Andrews said the government, which has secured a $24 billion line of credit in response to the crisis and says it is prepared to embark on an unprecedented spending program, would announce the date for the budget when it was ready.
In a statement released a short time ago, Treasurer Tim Pallas said: "The budget will continue our unprecedented support for Victorian families and businesses, and kickstart our economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
"Our success in suppressing this virus means we are ready to reopen and rebuild - and we will invest like never before in the infrastructure and services our state needs for the future."
South-west Sydney trampoline centre records another case
By Mary Ward
Another coronavirus case has been recorded in south-west Sydney, Premier Gladys Berejiklian has told reporters.
The case attended Flip Out Prestons Indoor Trampoline Park. The same venue was visited by a child while they were infectious with the virus on Sunday.
The new case's positive test came in after 8pm on Thursday so they will be included in Saturday's numbers.
NSW Health has asked anyone who attended the trampoline centre for at least an hour between 12pm and 1.50pm on Sunday to get tested immediately and self-isolate for 14 days.
There were also six new cases recorded in returned travellers in hotel quarantine.
The Premier said NSW Health would be providing more information later on Friday.
'Not taking any chances': Many staying home this weekend
While some Melburnians are heading straight back to pubs and cafes, others are taking a more cautious approach, particularly after images emerged of people flouting social distancing rules and not wearing face masks properly.
Ian says: "I'll be avoiding all the people with chin-diapers, especially the many, many businesses staffed by chin-diaperatti. If I go out, I'll be reporting businesses who (10 months into the pandemic) don't care about public health."
Sally: "Nothing different to what I have been doing the past 6 months. Just because shops are open doesn’t mean I need to go there! We are not out of this yet."
Kristina: "Not planning on being the guinea pig to see how little community transmission there really is! Laying low and safe close to home - not taking any chances! Will see how the numbers hold out in the next month. Too many people and businesses flouting the rules and thinking this is over. Our chances of entering a third wave before Xmas are high in my opinion."
'First stop parma and a pint': Some Melburnians plan to head out this weekend
We've already been inundated with responses about your plans for this weekend.
Matt is keen to get on the beers and have a parma. "First stop parma and pint. Second stop dinner with the parents who I haven't seen since March. Third stop parma and pint," he says.
Martin will be putting his legs to the test: "I'll be riding with Stereo Black Cycling Club for the first time in months. Some of the team have been slacking over lockdown so will be interesting!"
Pete is looking forward to playing golf, and "not driving my wife crazy for the first weekend in a long time".
Jackie is "catching up with friends for dinner tonight at a restaurant and going to the city tomorrow to shop. Haven't done both of these things for months. I haven't been to the city since March".
"Life has to go on, safely and with social distancing," Jackie says.
