The NSW Premier has said bomb threats that shut down scores of Sydney schools earlier this week came from eastern Europe.
The revelation comes as a suspected local copycat made a threatening phone call that shut down a north Sydney school on Thursday morning.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she was told by the NSW Police commissioner that Tuesday and Wednesday’s threats, which were received via email and led to some 30 schools being evacuated, originated in Europe.
The Premier said state police were co-operating with their federal counterparts and agencies abroad to investigate the threats.
“Police will come down on you heavily if anybody poses any threat at all to the safety of wellbeing of our students,” Ms Berejiklian told reporters.
“Gosh, haven’t the students of 2020 been through enough? The last thing they need is this. I’m just devastated that people would think it’s OK to do this.”
The Premier spoke as a police operation was under way at North Sydney Boys High School in Crows Nest, where students were rushed out of classrooms on Thursday morning and made to gather at nearby grandstands after a threat was made to the school.
It is understood police believe the latest threat is the work of a copycat.
NCA NewsWire understands North Sydney Boys High School was the only school affected by Thursday’s threat in which a person is said to have made a phone call referring to a bomb.
The suspected foreign threats shut down 20 schools in Sydney on Tuesday and 10 schools on Wednesday.
Detective Superintendent Matt Craft told reporters on Wednesday that the police approach would change from Thursday in order to ensure students could complete their final exams without disruption.
“Those email threats that have been received will no longer disrupt the exams that are undertaken by the student,” he said.
When questioned further on the announcement, Superintendent Craft declined to go into detail but said there were “new protocols to mitigate against and reduce the impact of this type of activity”.
NCA NewsWire understands that while police will be called to every instance of a threat received, an exam hall may not be evacuated if it can be determined safe by another measure, such as a police search of the building.
