Coronavirus pandemic a cover to try and weaken workers' pay and conditions, unions say
The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) secretary made the comments after four months of closed-door negotiations on industrial relations changes failed to reach broad consensus.
"Unfortunately, some employers are using the pandemic to want to bring about permanent changes, like permanent cuts that will pass on to the next generation," Ms McManus told the ABC.
"It's not really about the pandemic, it's just about using it as an opportunity to achieve things that they couldn't achieve beforehand."
The Federal Government is working on a package of industrial relations changes to put to Parliament later this year.
Ms McManus said she had respected the confidentiality of the industrial relations working groups while they were underway but was now worried some employer groups were lobbying the Government for changes to awards and bargaining laws that would leave workers worse off.

The postcodes of 3024 and 3025 is where these mystery cases are located, according to Professor Sutton.

Andrews, Sutton defend contact tracing
There were several questions today to both the Premier and the Chief Health Officer about the effectiveness of the state's contact tracing.
The Premier said if the the contact tracing was not working, then he would not be announcing 12 new cases today — implying there would be more.
Professor Sutton said the Government's response he been "above and beyond".
I would say we're following at a minimum the national guidelines for outbreak management and contact tracing.
And we're going above and beyond that.
We are following casual contacts, and we're asking them to test when they have been exposed at exposure sites.
So, we are doing an approach that is the same across Australia, at least at the minimum level as defined in the national guidelines, and above and beyond that.

REPORTER: It's been reported that New South Wales has recorded 13 new cases today. That's more than Victoria, but we're still in lockdown.
Professor Sutton's reply:
So the circumstances in New South Wales are very different.
They have prospectively followed a small number of cases over recent months, where they've looked forward to the contacts that they have and managed them appropriately.
If we had started with a few days of cases that were not really in complex households, that were not really challenging circumstances, we might have been able to approach this very differently.
What we had was 20,000 cases over over several weeks that have come down to a low level but the remaining chains of transmission in Victoria are some of the trickiest, I imagine, in the world.

Seven new locally acquired cases in NSW
Health authorities in NSW have confirmed seven new locally acquired coronavirus infections in the 24 hours to 8.00pm yesterday.
Two of them are GPs whose cases were revealed yesterday afternoon.
The other five are all members of the same household.
There were also six infections in returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

Why can't we extend the radius from 5km to 10km?
Professor Sutton said:
Look, it is ultimately a decision about what is proportionate for reducing the amount of interaction from one person to another.
Five kilometres is a judgement about where people could reasonably go for exercise, where people could reasonably go for the permitted reasons without increasing too significantly the number of other people and households they come into contact with.When you double that radius, you're multiplying by four times the number of households you can potentially come into contact with.
It's just trying to make a judgement about limiting interactions to an extent possible, but allowing people some opportunity to find a park, find a walking trail for the purpose of exercise.

What's the difference between NSW and Victoria?
Professor Sutton said the biggest difference between the two states is that at the height of the second wave,the virus got into households with large numbers and got into more businesses and industries.
So the challenge in Victoria is profoundly different from equivalent case numbers in any other jurisdiction of Australia.

CHO pleased with no 'unknown acquisition'
Professor Brett Sutton has said he wanted days like today — where it appears there are no unknown cases — every day.
The 12 cases today — one probably not real, and 11 are linked to known cases.
That means, by definition, there are no cases of unknown acquisition for today. That's what we want every day. And when we have cases who are in isolation at the time that they get tested and get that positive result, they're not gonna be exposing anyone else. And so we'll see these numbers drive down.

It's been put to me that it's the Government that has taken away people's freedoms.
The virus has taken people's freedoms away. Be very clear.

Andrews says on Sunday they will ease restrictions which 'are safe'
The Premier said again the entirety of Step 3 will not be introduced on Sunday.
The advice is that would not be safe.
We will, however, choose those items on that list of things proposed to happen this coming Sunday.
Those that are safe, we will proceed with.
And there may be some others that we believe are safe that were not necessarily foreshadowed at that time.
This is a changing thing. I know that's frustrating.
