Opinion: Pandemic shows strongmen the limits of swagger

By Farrah Tomazin

They were three men with swagger.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson – the larrikin Brit who once boasted that he "shook hands with everybody" at a coronavirus ward, only to be struck down by the virus soon after.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro – the former military man who cited his history as stabbing victim to boldly declare that "no little flu is going to take me down." It did.

And finally, Donald Trump, the reality TV star turned US President who has now become the most high-profile casualty of a vicious virus he once insisted would "go away quickly".

All three are emblematic of the rise of populism, the appeal of the strongman, and the decline of political norms in 2020.

Yet they are symbolic of another tale, too: of the terrible consequences that can unfold when defiance and denialism collide in the face of a deadly pandemic.

Pleas for JobKeeper budget rescue for Victoria

By Noel Towell

Victorian business groups and unions are pleading with the Commonwealth to use its budget on Tuesday to extend JobKeeper for the state’s workers.

Other budget measures, including fresh tax breaks for businesses as they recover from the state’s crippling lockdown, ‘shovel-ready’ infrastructure builds and a deferral of the rise in the superannuation guarantee could also be help the state get back on its feet, according to key groups who spoke to The Sunday Age.

Mr Frydenberg and his colleagues have been cool in public about the prospect of any special treatment in its wage subsidy schemes for Victoria, the state hardest hit after its second wave of coronavirus infections forced Melbourne into the economically devastating Stage four lockdown.

Hundreds of thousands call police to dob in coronavirus breaches

By Simone Fox Koob and Craig Butt

Victorians are dobbing on their neighbours in record numbers with hundreds of thousands of calls made to police to report COVID breaches since the start of the pandemic.

Data released by Victoria Police shows that at the height of the first wave of the pandemic, the police assistance line received about 100,000 calls during the month of April, 66 per cent more than during an average month.

Nearly four in 10 were people dobbing in other Victorians for breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Recent crime statistics data, which has provided a detailed picture of how enforcement strategies played out during the first wave of the pandemic, show coronavirus breaches were the 20th most common crime in the year to June, out of 114 distinct offence categories that police track.

Contact tracing units set to permanently track flu, STIs and food poisoning

By Benjamin Preiss

Contact tracing teams stationed across Victoria are set to become permanent fixtures of the health system, working to contain outbreaks ranging from influenza to sexually transmitted infections and food poisoning.

The Department of Health is working on a plan for contact tracing teams to run “surveillance” on communicable diseases beyond the coronavirus pandemic while remaining on standby to respond to future pandemics.

Local contact tracing teams, embedded in COVID regional response units, have proven instrumental in controlling coronavirus clusters in regional Victoria – particularly those overseen by the Barwon Health network in the south-west of the state.

There are now just two active cases recorded in regional Victoria.

The state government is also establishing similar response units in metropolitan Melbourne rather than running all contact tracing from a central point within the Department of Health.

Proponents of local contact tracing say it is far more effective than the previous centralised model because it is underpinned by intimate understanding of neighbourhoods and community trust in local healthcare providers.

Councils target car park closures to keep crowds from beaches

By Andrew Taylor

Coastal councils are considering restrictions on car parking near popular beaches to limit the number of visitors from far afield and preserve their beaches for locals amid concerns about overcrowding as summer approaches.

Northern Beaches Council will "review [its] options" to change pay-and-display machines limiting parking times and keep overflow car parks closed as part of its COVID-19 summer action plan.

"Parking is a scarce commodity we want to encourage fair use of so everyone can be safe and enjoy our wonderful coastline," a council spokesman said.

Car parks at Bondi Beach will be closed and temporary fencing erected when the maximum capacity is reached under Waverley Council’s outdoor public spaces management plan.

Chiefs-Patriots NFL game off amid report Cam Newton has COVID-19

The NFL postponed this week's game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs after “positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.”

ESPN reported on Saturday that Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was among those testing positive.

The NFL said on Saturday that the game, originally scheduled for 4:25 p.m. EDT on Sunday, will be played on Monday or Tuesday, a move that would be possible only if there is no wider spread of the disease on the rosters.

The Patriots confirmed that a player has tested positive but did not reveal his name.

Newton's agent did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking confirmation.
