Federal budget 2020 live news: Reaction to the Government’s plan to stimulate the economy amid COVID-19 recession - ABC News

(Reporting by Bridget Fitzgerald)

Perth couple Chris and Jo Davey told the ABC's AM program they are likely to benefit from slated tax cuts but little else in the Federal Budget.

The couple, both 47, were already under financial strain before the pandemic.

Mr Davey, a truck driver, was out of work with an injury and forced to look for a new job just as unemployment began to rise in March and April. Mrs Davey lost her casual work as a swim teacher when pools closed.

Any extra money made available through tax cuts will be pocketed, rather than spent.

"My gut instinct is to buckle down and concentrate on paying our debt - that's our priority," Mr Davey said.

Although Mr Davey has now found full-time work and is poised to be put on a permanent contract, Mrs Davey is now working three jobs, one as a cleaner and to as a swim teacher, to make up a full-time wage.

With so much of the budget focussed on incentivising employers to hire young workers between the ages of 16 and 35, the Daveys could also end up facing increased competition for work.

Mrs Davey said the so-called hiring credit threatens her job security. "For unskilled roles, yes, it will create heaps of competition," she said.

"There's no way [employers] are going to look at someone who's older if they can get someone younger and an extra $100 dollars a week."

But with a background in architectural drafting, Mrs Davey is looking for full-time, permanent work and was buoyed to hear there would be funding for short courses.

"That sort of thing where I can hash up on some skills [...] that would be of benefit to me," she said.

"I have spent so much money on training, professional development, on courses over the years and I'm still in this position where I'm a swim teacher and a cleaner — so if you're funding education, absolutely, that would help."
