Scalpers pounce on AFL Grand Final’s 20-year first - NEWS.com.au

Scalpers have seemingly taken advantage of the limited capacity attendance for Saturday evening’s AFL Grand Final, with overpriced tickets for sale online.

The Geelong Cats will take on the Richmond Tigers for this weekend’s highly-anticipated match at the Gabba. Ironically, the first Grand Final in nine years to feature two Victorian clubs will be held in Brisbane.

For the first time in more than 20 years, tickets for the sport’s premier event — which started at $185 — went on sale for the general public on Tuesday morning.

Fans were quick to take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, joining the online queue for tickets from 9am local time.

The Ticketmaster website withstood the barrage, but with just under 10,000 tickets available, sold out by 9.19am.

Queensland-based AFL lovers are expected to dominate this year’s crowd, although those from all other states and territories except NSW and Victoria can also attend without quarantine.

However, those travelling from interstate have been warned to expect a grilling from police at the border.

“The AFL is pleased to announce the general public on-sale for the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final at The Gabba is currently sold out,” the league said in a statement.

“Tickets, via the Ticketmaster platform sold out in just under 20 minutes this morning.

“Further tickets may become available as a result of unused allocations.

“The capacity for the Gabba for the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final is capped at 30,000.”

But as reported by 7 News, several tickets for the event were later available for purchase on online classified site Gumtree, some priced at $1000 each.

“If users are looking to purchase AFL grand final tickets on Gumtree, we urge them to ask the seller about the legitimacy and terms and conditions of the tickets being sold, before purchasing it,” a Gumtree spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“We have strict terms of use that each user needs to accept before listing on Gumtree.

“This includes posting policies where we take the law as our guidance: whatever is prohibited to offer for sale offline, is also prohibited on Gumtree.

“As the AFL grand final is being held in the Gabba in Queensland this year, local legislation states that it is illegal for anyone to resell tickets at a price greater than 10 per cent above the original ticket price.”

Meanwhile, world tennis No.1 Ash Barty will present the Tigers with the premiership cup if they are successful on Saturday night.

Barty is a lifelong supporter of Richmond and accepted the club’s invitation this week to give the cup to Damien Hardwick and Trent Cotchin if the Tigers win a third premiership in four years.

“I was surprised and very honoured when Peggy asked me to present the Cup. I know there are many other Richmond people who would normally do this but given the circumstances I am very grateful for the opportunity,” Barty said.

“I wish the boys all the best for Saturday and very much hope I have the chance to be out there when the siren goes celebrating another Richmond Premiership.

“I am a long-time fan of the Tigers and so proud to be associated with the club. I trained at the club for several years with a lot of the boys and have loved watching the Tigers on my travels, supporting them has been a constant source of enjoyment for me on the road. I have a huge admiration and respect for the club on and off the field, what they have achieved over the last decade is incredible.”
