Broome beaches reopen after fatal shark attack as first responder speaks out - ABC News

A Pilbara man who attempted to help the victim of yesterday's fatal shark attack in Broome has described the confronting scene that faced him.

Broome man Charles Cernobori was fatally bitten in shallow water off Cable Beach just before 9:00am on Sunday.

Beaches around the town have since reopened, and fisheries officers are continuing to monitor the waters off Broome.

Troy Ridley was enjoying a Sunday morning swim at the beach with his wife when he first heard Mr Cernabori's cries for help.

"I didn't know if he had someone else in his [parked] car and he was just hollering out to get their attention," Mr Ridley said.

"And then I saw the trail of blood."

They were more than a kilometre from the main swimming area, in a part of the beach mostly accessed by driving to what locals call "north of the rocks".

Mr Ridley and his wife, holidaying in Broome from Wickham, rushed to their car and drove the short distance to where the man was now making his way to shore.

"I saw him approaching the shoreline, and that's when I saw the big, massive dorsal behind him," Mr Ridley said.

"I'm thinking: 'Here we go, this is not going to be pretty', and it certainly wasn't."

'I just did the best I could'

Mr Cernobori's identity was formally released earlier today.

His friends and family have paid tribute on social media, while locals have continued to lay flowers on Cable Beach.

Mr Cernobori had been bodyboarding when attacked by the large three to four-metre shark, which may have been a tiger shark, bull shark, or bronze whaler.

As Mr Ridley helped him to shore, Mr Cernobori was already losing consciousness.

"I had some rope in the car, and I tied a loop in one end and wrapped it around his leg and tightened it as hard as I could and tried to stem the blood flow," Mr Ridley said.

"I offered CPR, I tried to revive him, but honestly, I just did the best I could."

Mr Ridley's wife had called triple zero and helped direct police and ambulance officers to the scene of the attack.

"They came in at a great rate of knots, and they had all the lights and sirens going," Mr Ridley said.

"They grabbed what they had to in the sense of first aid equipment, probably at that stage [it was] maybe a bit too [late]."

Shark had no fear

Mr Ridley said the shark stayed in the shallows at the site of the attack for up to an hour.

"The shark just continued to hang around, it just didn't want to disappear at all, it was in so shallow in some of the spots," he said.

Police fired shots at the shark but the animal did not appear to be injured.

Authorities say they are continuing forensic work to try to identify the species.

Tiger sharks are the most common large shark that attacks people, but Mr Ridley said he was confident it was a different species.

"Tiger sharks are quite distinctive. I've seen a lot of tiger sharks before out diving and fishing, and personally I don't think it was a tiger shark," he said.

"I really do think it was a bull shark or a bronze whaler."

Mr Ridley also noticed that there were larges schools of small bait fish close to shore that may have attracted the shark.

"The one thing I noticed yesterday was that there was just so much bait around," he said.

Mr Ridley said he was still processing the experience.

"You think to yourself, 'What the hell just happened?' So yeah, it's still sinking in — there's no question about that," he said.

"My condolences obviously to the family are just right at the top of the list at the moment.

"I feel sorry for poor [Mr Cernobori] you know, it's pretty bad."
