Harrowing scenes as a loved one screams 'how did I not protect her?' outside the family home where a young woman was found dead with bloodstains on the garden fence - as 'man known to her' is arrested

A young woman has been found dead inside her Melbourne family home.

Celeste Manno, 23, was found deceased in the Umbria Road property, in Merdna, about 4.10am Monday. 

A 35-year-old man believed to be known to Ms Manno has been arrested.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries and remains under police guard. It is believed he took himself to the Merdna police station sometime in the morning. 

Homicide detectives are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

Tributes have begun pouring in online for the young woman, who has been remembered by friends as a 'beautiful soul'.

'Rest In Peace beautiful girl I swear to god I’m going to miss you so much,' one friend wrote.

'Words cannot describe what I’m feeling right now I’m shocked and this news, may you rest in peace and fly high our new angel.'

Friend Bertine Rashou said Ms Manno was' the most beautiful soul' she had ever encountered.

'I am absolutely shocked and devastated. I have no words my heart is broken,' Ms Rashou said.

Ms Manno was a criminology and psychology student at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, according to her social media profiles.

A large group of devastated loved ones could be seen hugging and crying outside the four-bedroom home on Monday, where Ms Manno lived with her mother and other family members, the Herald Sun reports.

Ms Manno's mother tried to run through the crime tape as her daughter's body was removed from the house but was stopped by officers, while one woman screamed 'how did I not protect her?' as she was comforted by loved ones on the lawn.   

Crime scenes have been set up at northeast Melbourne residence and at the police station.

Blood was visible on a fence at the property and a blue Peugeot outside the police station underwent forensic testing on Monday.
