'We have to stop blaming the people'
I'm just going to take you back to the interview with Fairfield City Councillor Dai Le, who was on ABC Mornings a short time ago.
She was asked about whether the messaging about the virus was culturally appropropriate for diverse populations.
Here's what she had to say:
"I'm also on the board of Multicultural NSW and I know that as an agency we have done a lot of work around languages, sending out languages to the various communities.
"I've been on a lot of Zoom calls with various communities, migrant resource centres, all of that out here, every time, talking to community leaders, every message the government sent through.
"I believe, from my perspective, that those messages have gotten out to the cultural diverse communities.
"Now you have to remember, it's not if it's a new thing now. It's been 18 months.
"By now, everyone is aware of the impact of COVID. So it's not a new thing.
She said the problem was with the hotel quarantine system, not people doing the wrong thing:
"Last night, at our testing clinic at the Fairfield show ground, we had 2,000 people coming through.
"Something is going not right. Let's not blame the people.
"I think we have to stop blaming any communities, east, south, west, whatever.
"It's the leadership — the quarantining of people in the first place, then it spreads out.
"We have to stop blaming the community.
"I just feel like every time when there's an issue that comes out to the south-west, our south-west area gets the spotlight and seems we're doing the wrong thing.
"I would say that we have been doing the right thing, many in our community, our businesses have done the right thing.
"A lot of the businesses have shut down. Closed up. And they're run by migrants and refugee families.
"These people are not paid in the bureaucracy, you can go home, and you can, you know, go out and make an announcement about the whole issue and you still get paid.
"The small businesses have been really impacted here.
"And we have got no idea of how these businesses, the livelihood of these communities, will come out of this.
"Because that's the important thing — 80 per cent of our background of our economy are run by small businesses and run by families, families out here."
