Canberrans are being warned case numbers will continue to grow as the state recorded 17 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday.
It brings the total number of cases in the ACT to 45. Of those, health authorities confirmed 37 had links to other cases. Eight are under investigation. None are in hospital.
More than 7500 people are now in home quarantine across Canberra and the list of exposure sites has risen to 80 venues.
There are now more than 6500 known contacts of confirmed contacts.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr warned the next couple of days would be “critical” for the ACT.
“The point of the lockdown and the success of the lockdown is very much contingent on what happens over the next few days. This is a really critical time ... it's not the time to be easing restrictions,” he said.
ACT Policing will be called in to assist businesses in cracking down on compliance after authorities identified “pressure points” in retail spaces.
“In amending our public health directions, we are requiring businesses to take all reasonable steps to ensure that anyone who enters their business gets what they need and leaves promptly,” Mr Barr said.
“ACT policing will be actively enforcing this in partnership with businesses.”
Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman said investigations into how Covid-19 reached Canberra were ongoing.
“I think sometimes in these cases it is difficult to pinpoint the exact source of an outbreak,” Dr Coleman said.
“We are continuing to do investigations into that group of first cases that were identified to see if we can identify any of the linkages that are occurring there.
“My public health priority about that question is making sure that we haven‘t missed any potential chains of transmission.
“I think we're doing very well in identifying where all our cases are coming from.”
Dr Coleman also warned the exposure site list would reach 100 locations soon.
“When I was monitoring NSW exposure locations and Victoria locations, I was hoping we would never be in that position, but we'll reach 100 locations, probably tomorrow or the next day,” she said.
An extension of a business support program was also announced by Mr Barr.
It will provide $10,000 for employing businesses and $4000 for non-employing businesses.
“In addition to the business and individual household supports, we will also be providing additional resources in partnership with the community sector to support the most vulnerable in Canberra,” Mr Barr said.
It comes after Canberra’s lockdown was extended for an extra two weeks on Monday.
With the two week extension, the ACT’s lockdown is now set to end on September 2 instead of August 19.
