Former Liberal Party president and Carlton boss John Elliott dies aged 79 - ABC News

Former Liberal Party president and Carlton boss John Elliott has died in hospital aged 79.

The businessman was federal president of the Liberal Party from 1987 to 1990 as well as treasurer and vice-president of the Liberal Party in Victoria, as well as its federal treasurer.

He also served as the president of the Carlton football club from 1983 to 2002, presiding over two AFL premierships.

His son Tom Elliott confirmed his father's death to the Herald Sun on Thursday evening.

"Sadly, my father, John Elliot, died just a couple of hours ago," The Age reports Tom Elliot as saying.

"He had been ill for a few weeks. He had a bad fall a little while back and had been at the Epworth Hospital at Richmond.

"We got the very sad news this afternoon that he had taken his last breath."

Elliott would have been 80 in October.

Tributes have come in from Liberal party members at both state and federal levels.

Prominent Liberal party figure Brian Loughnane tweeted his condolences.

"An important figure in the life of the Party nationally and in Victoria during a crucial period," he wrote.

"Always a source of sage advice. Will be greatly missed."

Elliott was eulogised by the Carlton football club on Twitter, where he served for two decades as president, winning premierships in 1987 and 1995.

Elliot was sacked following the 2002 AFL season after Carlton was found to have breached salary cap rules.

Born in Melbourne in 1941, he attended Carey Grammar and then Melbourne University, working in business until 1972 when he formed a consortium to buy the IXL food group.

Elliott came to notoriety in the 80s, after a 1981 merger saw the creation of giant Elders IXL.

As managing director of the group, Elliot was in charge of Australia's largest private exporter of agricultural products.

In 2005, having earlier been found to have traded while insolvent, he declared himself bankrupt.

In recent years, Elliott appeared with his son Tom on 3AW radio programming as a commentator.
