Today was a lot. So how should you explain it to your kids?

Forgive the pun, but today was shocking for plenty of people. But kids might have the most trouble making sense of what happened.

So ABC Everyday's Rachel Rasker got in touch with child psychologist Kate Evans to find out how to talk to your little ones about the quake.

"Developmentally, it's normal to have these feelings when unexpected events occur. It's just really important that parents are OK to hear those feelings from their kids."

She says the key is to "not shut them down, and be open to listening and understanding those feelings".

You could say: "That was a surprise, and it was a bit scary, wasn't it? Mum got a bit scared too, but we're all safe and it's OK."

Even if your child doesn't bring up the quake with you, Ms Evans says it's worth checking in with them by explaining what happened with clear information.

She advises saying something like: "That was an earthquake. And when we get earthquakes, sometimes we feel shaking and things in our house can move around."
