‘Hunger Games’: NSW grabs vaccines - NEWS.com.au

NSW is grabbing an unfair lion’s share hare of vaccines in a “Hunger Games” style tussle with the other states, putting them at a disadvantage.

NSW is grabbing an unfair share of vaccines in a “Hunger Games” style tussle with the other states, leaving them to fall behind what they deserve to be allocated per head of population.

Federal Government distribution of Pfizer has seen “huge shifts in favour” of NSW over Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia, the ABC’s 7.30 on Monday night reported.

And the vaccine allocations that are unfairly favouring NSW over the other states are likely to continue with Victoria at a particular disadvantage.

Where population would normally deem Victoria received 82 per cent of the amount NSW got, it was only receiving 66pc, with its northern neighbour getting the lion’s share.

“It’s almost a sense of the Hunger Games, of people chasing vaccine,” Laura Tingle said.

“The extent to which vaccines have been concentrated on New South Wales at the cost of other states may come as a surprise.”

The percentage of vaccines coming into NSW had more than increased as the state’s Covid-19 outbreak with the Delta strain deepened over recent months.

“Back in late June, as Sydney’s current outbreak was just taking off, New South Wales was receiving 32pc of the national Pfizer allocation through primary care, mostly GPs,” Tingle said.

“That’s roughly in line with New South Wales’s proportion of the national population.

“But by last month, the allocation had jumped to 45pc.

“Some of that was thanks to extra vaccines like the delivery from Poland, that mostly went to New South Wales.”

Vaccines have been variously brought forward or reallocated to rush them to the troubled hot spots.

“But that’s not the whole story and these figures illustrate the extent to which the NSW doses have come at the expense of other states.”

At the same time, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia had seen all their allocations “fall well below their share of the national population”.

The Federal Government distribution of Pfizer through the GP network and now

pharmacies has seen “huge shifts” in supply in favour of New South Wales.

7.30 reported that NSW administered a “staggering” 904,184 jabs in two weeks in August, more than double Victoria.

Other states had repeatedly said for some time they could not get sufficient Pfizer and Victoria may have missed out on 340,000 Pfizer jabs, Queensland, 100,000 jabs, and Western Australia, 114,000 jabs.

Extra weighting of future Pfizer allocations favour New South Wales for the remainder of the year.

The Federal Department of Health horizon allocation document updated in late July forecasts the distribution of various vaccines until the end of December.

It shows Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia continuing to receive much less than their population share of vaccines.

In a statement to 7.30, the Victorian health minister Martin Foley said it was “disappointing that the Commonwealth appears to be pursuing a national plan to vaccinate New South Wales at the expense of all other Australians.”

A spokesperson for Operation COVID Shield, the national body responsible for the rollout, headed by Lieutenant-General John Frewen said part of the response to the New South Wales outbreak had involved rapidly bringing 260 GP practices in New South Wales online.

To balance this, the spokesperson said, extra doses will be provided to other states starting with Victoria, from September 13.

A new forecast of how vaccines would be shared out would be released shortly.
