Key Event

Coming in at number six is ... the boab!

Found in WA's Kimberley and western NT, Australia's boab has a huge bottle-shaped trunk that stores water: just one of the reasons this is an important tree for the local Indigenous people. The boab is deciduous during the dry season.(Getty)

Ooh, another crowd favourite! Apologies to the person who just sent in their predictions. I thought it might have finished higher as well, but a strong result for such a gorgeous tree.

We're approaching the halfway point of the count down, and things are getting close, let me tell you that much.

A tribute to the Karri

The ‘Mountain Ash’ of the west, this is a mighty tree and worthy of the top ten. Probably got more votes on one side of the Nullarbor, but anyone who has seen this in the Western Australian forests will have thought about voting for it. All power to the big trees of the south-west – the Karri, Jarrah and (not Laura) Tingle.

Ann Jones reveals her favourite native tree

Ann smiles as she bird watches in the forest.
Which tree is Ann's favourite?(Ann Jones: Corey Hague)

Dr Ann Jones says picking a favourite tree is "like choosing a favourite child", but "the snow gum has a special place in my heart."

"It's the ONLY tree that grows right up the top of our mountains. It can survive being buried in snow, the coldest winds and being exposed through the summer.

"And on a personal level there is something so incredibly grounding about being up there on the edge of the sky with the snow gums, to smell that alpine air and feel the crispness of the atmosphere. It's like no other."

But she's devasted the sandlewood didn't make it.

"I was BLOWN AWAY by this tree in person, not just it's scent, but the incredible role it plays in the environment it lives in. It grows in arid areas and basically becomes a little haven of moisture and compost, it grows in such a funny manner, with branches that die and form little hollows, it has stinky flowers for insects to drink nectar, and big fruit for marsupials to eat.

"At first glance, it's unremarkable. But any time spent AT ALL with a sandalwood leaves you in no doubt that it is a special tree."

(Chelsea Mose)

"Here's a photo me in the snow gums on top of Mt Ginini while we were shooting for Australia's Favourite Tree. I'm with Matthew Brookhouse from ANU who studies the snow gums and the dieback that's occurring. "

'I never knew there was so much variety'

I will say this much, thank you so much for doing this. I never knew there was so much variety (being a south easterner) and it has been amazing to see over the last few weeks!

- Paul

Thanks for the lovely message, Paul. We're glad to hear it.

Key Event

Taking out the seventh spot is ... Karri

Growing up to 90 metres tall, the karri is one of the tallest tree species in the world. It's found in forests in south-west WA, with a pale trunk that changes colour as it ages, and white flowers (important for honey production). Its wood is prized for building and furniture.

What a stunning tree! Should have been higher in my books, but not a bad finish.

'There is no prettier tree in Australia'

Who doesn’t love this floriferous gum tree? With tough, grafted specimens now grown in gardens around Australia, it hardly feels like a Western Australian endemic (which it is). On sandy soil, with a blue sky behind, there is no prettier tree in Australia.

- Tim Entwisle

What a title! Thanks Tim.

Taking out the eighth spot ... the red flowering gum

Native to WA, this tree is now one of the most commonly planted ornamental eucalypts, thanks to its spectacular flowers. Hybrids provide flowers ranging from bright red to orange and pink. Its flowers also tell Indigenous people information about the seasons.(Getty)

The first time we're seeing a gum place in the top 10! But there's still plenty that could take out the crown.

'A very special tree, one worth singing about'

I know a few people around Nowra (and further north) who will be very disappointed this one didn’t get in the top few. Still the stunning red flowers in a month or two will make up for that oversight. A very special tree, and one worth singing about...

Coming in at ninth place ... the Illawarra flame tree!

Immortalised in the Cold Chisel song Flame Trees, this spectacular deciduous native tree erupts in bright red bell-shaped flowers in late spring, followed by large seed pods that can be cooked on a fire and eaten.(Getty: Auscape)

Another fan favourite!

Are we surprised the Illawarra flame tree isn't higher?

How we're coping with seeing the wattle come tenth

I'm a little shocked at that! - Natty

Oh, that's a shame! The golden wattle is such a good tree - it's pretty and it's useful (edible) - Izzy

maybe the golden wattle sometimes looks more like a bush than a tree!? - Jan

Wow.... Shocked. Cheers guys, crying at work now - Sam

A word from our expert on the golden wattle's placement

At least it made the top 10! I reckon this made it in the shortlist because it’s in full, gorgeous bloom right now. It’s also our floral emblem of course, but it’s barely a tree at the best of times. That all said, it’s worth heading out right now if you are in south-eastern mainland Australia to enjoy the golden colour and heady perfume of our tenth favourite tree!

Coming in at tenth place... the golden wattle!

Native to the south-east of mainland Australia, the golden wattle is also a weed in other areas. Its profuse golden blooms adorn Australia's coat of arms, and are used for perfume and honey.(Supplied: Tim Entwisle)

I am SHOCKED. So many of you said you were golden wattle fans! Even Ita!

How are we feeling? Did we expect an upset this early?

Which tree is David Speers backing?

David (ABC News: Natasha Johnson)

We've got the inside scoop from the Insiders host, and we can confirm he's a fan of ... the snow gum!

"They are such beautiful trees in both shape and colour," he told ABC.

"Perhaps not as flashy as some of their rivals, but humbly withstand all sorts of weather. They always remind me of visits to the pristine and peaceful high country around Kosciusko and the ACT.

"I also love the Boab ... won't be upset if that wins. But, go Snow Gums!!"

What can we say, you folks love the gums

The River Red Gum has to win. Picnics on the banks of the Murray would be nothing without the shade of the River Reds. - Jill Withers

What could be more beautiful than a shimmering ghost gum in the heat of the day and even at night they glow in the moonlight. The ghost gum has to be my favorite by far. - Elsie

If the Ghost Gum does not win, I will lodge a formal protest. - Michael Doyle
