Sydney train strike begins as commuters face most disruptive day yet - 9News

Strike action has officially begun on what is expected to be one of the most disrupted days on public transport to date for Sydneysiders.

Thousands of rail workers walked off the job at 10am and until at least 4pm there will be major delays on trains across New South Wales.

The North Shore, Northern and Western Line, Blue Mountains Line, Central Coast Newcastle Line, and all regional lines, except stations south to Melbourne, will be running very few services throughout the day.

About 180 suburbs and towns in New South Wales are expected to be affected.

It's the latest stage in an ongoing stand-off between the state government and the rail union over the safety of the current fleet.

Yesterday, the union even appeared to suggest that graffiti on some of the trains was one of the reasons for the strike action.

But Rail Tram and Bus Union secretary Alex Claassens said there were multiple issues in play.

"Refusing to operate trains that don't meet minimum safety standards is the most basic industrial action you can possibly get, but what it is doing is laying bare just how poorly our current trains are maintained," he said.

Claassens said trains that don't meet 'minimum safety standards' – an official safety level within the railway – could include those with passenger safety intercom systems that don't work, toilets that aren't functioning, or even mechanical issues.

However, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet is furious, calling for an end to the chaos he says the ongoing industrial action is causing commuters.

The union has repeatedly put the onus on Transport for NSW for the cancelled services and travel chaos, saying the strike action is designed to cause minimal inconvenience to commuters.

More strike action is planned for Thursday if an agreement is not reached beforehand.
