Police have described the actions of a boy who managed to break free from his alleged abductor as "courageous and brave" after a man broke into his home and abducted his younger brother early on Friday morning.
Key points:
- Police allege the man abducted the younger child from his home early Friday morning
- They say he then tried to drag his brother from the house who fought free
- A police search of the area located the younger boy in a nearby house
Officers have charged a 34-year-old man over the alleged abduction of a boy and the attempted abduction of his older brother from their home in the Western Australian Wheatbelt town of Moora.
The man has been charged with two counts of forcibly or fraudulently detaining a child under 16, two counts of aggravated burglary and one count of deprivation of liberty.
He has also been charged being disguised to commit an offence and criminal damage, and will face Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Moora police Inspector Kareene Santoro said officers were called to the home just after 5:00am after a man entered via the front door and dragged the older boy out.
The child managed to fight his way free and alert an adult, who then realised the younger boy was missing.
Family and friends began desperately searching for the child and called police.
Inspector Santoro said officers found CCTV showing a man entering the home via the front door around 4:00am and carrying the younger boy out.
They located the younger child at a nearby home shortly after 7:00am.
Child 'distressed'
She said the younger boy came to the door in a "distressed state" and was taken into care by the police officers, who then arrested the 34-year-old man.
Both children were taken to hospital for a medical check and are now back in the care of their family.
Inspector Santoro said it was a "very traumatic incident which was thankfully brought to a very quick resolution" and praised the actions of the older brother.
"The ... boy's courage and bravery to get himself out of that situation was tremendous, and going and alerting an adult straight away of what had occurred was a really good job by him," the inspector said.
She said those actions led to his younger brother being found.
Police do not believe the man in custody knows the boys.
Shire of Moora President Tracey Lefroy said the town's "hearts go out" to the those affected.
"The Moora community is wonderfully tight knit and we will wrap support around all affected by this incident," she said.
