Hunter Valley crash impact on local footy club not seen since death of Perth Kingsley players in Bali bombings - PerthNow

The Hunter Valley wedding bus crash has weighed heavily on a local footy club in NSW which is reeling after losing seven players in the tragedy.

The Singleton Roosters Aussie Rules club lost team players from both the men’s and women’s sides in the shocking crash.

It’s the kind of devastation not seen since the 2002 Bali bombings, where seven Kingsley Football Club players and six Coogee Dolphins Rugby League players tragically died.

At about 11.30pm on Sunday, June 11, a coach carrying 35 wedding guests near Greta in country NSW crashed when approaching a roundabout, killing 10 people.

The five members of the women’s side, known as The Roosterettes, who died are coach Nadene McBride, her daughter and vice-captain Kyah McBride, captain Tori ‘Torsy’ Cowburn, Bec Mullen and Lynan Scott.

In the men’s side, it was Andrew Scott (Lynan’s husband), and Kane Symons (Kyah’s partner) who also lost their lives.

A photo shared on the football club’s social media page, shows the women’s team winning their 2020 premiership, including the four women in the team that were in the crash.

Professional football teams also paid tribute to the lives lost, at their games this weekend.

The GWS Giants and Fremantle Dockers wore black armbands during their game in Sydney. And the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters had a minute of silence before their game began.

The team players who died in the crash were not the only ones involved with the Singleton Roosters club.

The couple whose wedding preceded the crash, Mitchell Gaffney and Maddy Edsell, were also members of the footy club.

Ten days before his wedding, Gaffney was named the ‘player to watch’ in an upcoming match against Newcastle.

The emcee of the wedding Alex Tigani, who is recovering from injuries from the crash, has since shared tributes to those who died, by sharing to social media a parkrun with the Singleton Rugby Club.

The series of photos show players supporting the footy team by wearing the red and white colours of the Roosters.
