Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk issued writs to the Governor on Tuesday morning and officially placed the state in caretaker mode buoyed by a swing in the latest polls.
The Labor leader’s harsh border restrictions have frustrated political counterparts across the country in recent months and starved holiday-makers of a beachside escape in the Sunshine State.
But it appears the tough policies have worked among Ms Palaszczuk’s constituents, with her management of the coronavirus crisis leading to a surge in popularity from just 29 per cent in February to 57 per cent in the latest YouGov Poll.
According to the exclusive The Courier Mail poll, Labor now leads the Liberal-National Party 52 per cent to 48 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

The result is a reversal from the numbers crunched four months ago, with an indicative swing to the Palaszczuk Government enough to claim a third term after the October 31 election.
The latest poll has also laid bare the state leader’s most dominant performance against LNP leader Deb Frecklington as the better premier, leading 48 per cent to 22 per cent while 30 per cent of voters remain undecided.
On Monday, Ms Palaszczuk categorically ruled out the possibility of doing deals with minor parties to form a minority government as the possibility of a hung parliament looms.
“I’m asking Queenslanders for a majority government so I can continue the work we have been doing … in keeping Queenslanders safe,” she told reporters.
“I can absolutely rule out no deals. I need a majority government.
“If we are going to continue our path to economic recovery, if we’re going to continue our strong health response, I’m asking Queenslanders for a majority government.”
The LNP matched the declaration and said it would preference Labor last across all seats in a bid to avoid the formation of a minority government.
“This election is about who’s got the best plan for the economy moving forward,” Mrs Frecklington told the ABC on Tuesday morning.
“I said two years ago there would be no deals (with minor parties). Queenslanders deserve a majority LNP government.
“I’m working with every fibre of my being to earn the trust and respect of Queensland voters … so we have everyone’s first vote.”
