Families returning to Australia from overseas during the pandemic have been separated from their pets for months and in some cases more than a year.
But many were reunited with their owners in Melbourne today after a charter flight of animals was released from quarantine.
When Rowan and Jan moved back to Australia from Canada a year ago, their dogs were supposed to follow shortly after, but they never made it.
"It was about a week out (from their flight), when the border shut. So we were waiting another seven months, seven month delay," Jan said.
"I'm so happy, it was so hard this whole year, the pandemic and not having their little enjoyment."
For biosecurity reasons all pets arriving in Australia have to quarantine for 10 days, with the only facilities in Melbourne.
But the journey is not over for all the animals released, with many continuing on to other parts of the country.
That's the case for Bardso, the cat, whose parents are home waiting for him in Fremantle.
Marlene Farrugia picked up Bardso for her daughter and he'll stay with her until the WA border is opened.
"He was supposed to come back in May, his mum and dad came back in March and had to leave him in Edmonton," she said.
"They were a bit stressed not knowing if it was going to happen, with pet transport discontinued."
Ms Farrugia said she was looking forward to getting him home.
"As soon as we've had a bite to eat and got a little bit settled I'll Facetime with my daughter, hopefully they're awake by then in the west."
