Why is the Australian Open going ahead, but Victorians from red zones can’t enter the state?
This has been a recurring question in recent days as thousands of Victorians have been stuck in red zones in Brisbane and Sydney.
(ICYMI: Brisbane will be downgraded from a red zone to an orange zone from 6pm tonight – so Victorians will be able to get a permit online within minutes then travel home. The Victorian Government expects to downgrade a number of Greater Sydney local government areas in coming days.)
Over the past week, the Victorian Government has repeatedly defended its decision to allow the Australian Open to go ahead.
When asked about the issue today, Premier Daniel Andrews said the Grand Slam’s status in the Australian Open was not “chiselled in stone”.
“There are literally dozens of cities around the world that would pay almost anything to have a Grand Slam at our expense,” he said.
“We are simply not going to do that. We are running a hotel quarantine model to the highest standard, and they are the important decisions that have been made.”
He said the Australian Open had no impact on the number of Australians returning from overseas that are coming into hotel quarantine in Victoria. He also said the Victorian Government would have announcements to make “soon” about increasing the number of people who can come back to Victoria from overseas.
In the past week, Government representatives have also defended the decision by pointing to the strict quarantine requirements tennis players and officials will face, or to the importance of the event for Victoria.
