Three men have died after being swept into the surf by a large wave at Port Kembla in the NSW Illawarra region.
A major emergency response began just after 10:00pm yesterday, following reports several people had been washed off rocks and into the sea.
Witnesses told police the group was standing on rocks fishing near an area known as Hill 60, when they were hit by the wave.
The bodies of the men were recovered overnight following a search involving police, paramedics, rescue helicopters and local lifeguards.
Police believe two of the men, aged 45 and 49, are from Green Valley in Sydney's west, while the third is a 69-year-old from Campsie in Sydney's south-west.
The two men from Green Valley were from the same family while the 69-year-old was not related.
Police said the men have not yet been formally identified and post-mortem examinations will be undertaken to confirm exactly how they died.
More to come.
