No new locally acquired cases in Victoria
Victoria has extended its run of no new locally acquired cases of coronavirus.
It has now been 13 says since a case of community transmission was detected in the state.
There were nearly 15,600 tests conducted in the reporting period.
However, there are four new cases in hotel quarantine.
100 mask fines issued in Sydney
Police have issued about 100 fines for not wearing masks in Greater Sydney since they became mandatory.
A total of about 2000 fines have been issued in NSW in relation to health orders since the COVID-19 pandemic began in Australia, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller told 2GB this morning.
Mr Fuller said he expects police enforcement of health orders will continue for most of 2021, even after the vaccine rollout begins.
However, Mr Fuller said police are “working with the community everywhere we can”.
“We’re not taking an offensive approach to this … we’ve issued 2000 tickets in nearly 12 months while Victoria has given 20,000,” he said.
Mr Fuller said police issue cautions where they can, but confirmed that action will be taken in response to recent footage of a party at Bondi Beach.
“We need to take those types of breaches seriously. Unfortunately it’s the challenges of 2021, if we don’t take that type of complaint seriously, people will get complacent, stop wearing masks,” he said.
“We need to consolidate on the work we did on 2020 until vaccines become available.”
New Sydney venues attended by confirmed case
NSW health authorities last night named a number of new venues in western Sydney that were attended by a confirmed COVID-19 case.
The venues are in Auburn and Berala and anyone who attended them at the times listed is being asked to get tested immediately and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.
They include:
- The Village Tavern in Auburn on December 28-29, January 7-8 and January 13-14, between 6pm and 4am.
- Berala Hotel on December 30, from 6am to close.
- Auburn Hotel on January 12, from 6am to close.
Anyone who has visited Auburn Central shopping centre or the Auburn shops along Queen St and South Terrace at any time since January 1, 2021 and is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms is also being asked to get tested and self-isolate while they wait for the result.
Travel restrictions costing NSW $180 million per week
By Tom Rabe and Mary Ward
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet are urging other states to scrap domestic coronavirus travel restrictions after Victoria reopened to parts of Sydney and government figures reveal the borders stalemate is costing NSW close to $180 million per week.
As NSW recorded zero cases of community transmission on Monday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the state would downgrade all but 10 of Sydney's 35 local government areas from 'red' to 'orange' risk.
Ms Berejiklian said the move, which will allow Sydneysiders from orange LGAs to travel to Melbourne but isolate until receiving a negative coronavirus test, was a "step in the right direction".
However, she said there should be no domestic border restrictions given federal health authorities have declared there are no Commonwealth hotspots.
Mr Perrottet said while health concerns were a priority, "we also need to ensure livelihoods are protected as well". Government figures from Destination NSW show interstate visitors spent $9.5 billion in NSW in 2019, or close to $180 million per week.
Good morning
Hello and thanks for joining us for our ongoing coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.
Here's a quick recap of where we're at as we start the day.

- A new warning against overseas travel has sparked calls for billions of dollars in federal aid for the tourism industry as the government prepares to continue substantial curbs on international border crossings for most of this year.
- Bernard Tomic's girlfriend Vanessa Sierra has slammed hotel quarantine living conditions, revealing the pair have been unable to do any exercise whatsoever in the lead-up to the Australian Open. There are now more than 70 players and dozens more staff in 14-day hotel quarantine after a third charter flight into Melbourne was linked to a positive COVID-19 case.
- Health authorities in Norway say there's no evidence of a direct link between the recent string of deaths among elderly people inoculated against COVID-19, and the vaccine they received. Health Minister Greg Hunt says Australia is proceeding with extreme caution in the process to gain approval for the Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
- The global case tally has reached 95,392,103, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
