Weekend weather forecast: Sydney braces for ‘heaviest 24-hour rain event in one year’ - NEWS.com.au

A “brutal” and “scary” weather event in NSW is forecast to continue into this weekend, with residents warned to secure some indoor plans and brace for potential flash flooding as a result of the heavy falls.

Northern NSW weather reporter Gavin Morris – who reports the weather for NBN Television, the Channel 9 station for Newcastle and northern NSW – told viewers on Thursday night the “truly extraordinary” three-to-four day event had only just begun.

“You have this incredible trough so the entire east coast is looking at flooding rain on the weekend and into next week and then another rain event (is due),” he said.

In Sydney, Sky News Weather presenter Kristy Lloyd said the capital is expecting “the heaviest 24-hour rain event in one year”.

On Saturday, over 100mm for some areas is expected, while on Sunday, up to 20mm could fall in the first half of the day.

“(It’s) advisable – strongly advisable – to stay at home if you can,” she said.

Sydney zone commander for the NSW SES, Greg Swindells, warned people on Thursday to think again about road trips, which could see them faced with floodwaters at a moment’s notice.

“We also urge anybody who’s considering travelling this weekend and into early next week to perhaps reconsider that travel if it’s not required and to put it off and stay home,” Mr Swindells said.

“Doesn’t matter how experienced you are as a driver or how big your vehicle may be, we can’t guarantee the integrity of floodwaters on road surfaces so please if it’s flooded forget it.”

It’s unlikely the sun will get a look in over the coming days in the NSW capital, with a top of 25C on Saturday and top of 26C on Sunday.

Brisbane will be wet too, but not quite as dramatic. Residents could “easily see” 20 to 50mm of rainfall over the weekend – heavier if they do get the storms forecast on Saturday – and a top of 28C that will drop slightly to 26C on Sunday.

A little bit of a different story in Melbourne, where Victorians will enjoy mostly sunny conditions on Saturday with a top of 26C and only a slight chance of rainfall. On Sunday, a 60 per cent chance of rain, with showers leading into Monday and Tuesday.

In Adelaide, there’ll be dry conditions over the next few days, with no rainfall expected and highs touching 30C. Very little rain should reach populated areas of South Australia until Monday.

Heatwave conditions will continue in the nation’s west, with a sunny 37C on Saturday in Perth and 36C on Sunday. Chance of any showers remain slim until later next week.

In the Top End, Darwin can expect possible thunderstorms from Friday leading into next week, with a top of 32C on both days of the weekend.

Heavy showers are possible in Canberra, where the mercury isn’t set to pass the low 20s and up to 20mm is expected on Saturday.

And it’ll be a dry weekend across much of Tasmania, with a top of 23C on both Saturday and Sunday and mostly sunny conditions in Hobartuntil Tuesday.
