WA restrictions explained: What you can and can't do in Perth and Peel until May 8 - ABC News

Having spent the Anzac Day long weekend in a snap lockdown, residents in Perth and the Peel region have been abiding by COVID-19 restrictions for the past week.

Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan last night announced some restrictions would remain in place after tomorrow, when the existing restrictions were set to expire.

So, what's changed? Here's a snapshot of the new rules taking effect at 12:01am on Saturday.

Do I need to keep wearing my mask?

Masks are here to stay for another week in indoor public venues, including in workplaces and on public transport.

If you're headed outdoors, masks are no longer required unless it is not possible to physically distance.

At schools, teachers and high school students must wear masks.

People who are unable to wear masks for medical reasons are exempt from the rule.

Can I have people over to my house?

Indoor private gatherings are allowed, but they're going to be capped at 30 people because masks aren't required in homes.

So, if you cancelled your birthday plans on the Anzac Day long weekend, now's your chance to make up for it.

But the Premier says the cap is aimed at stopping big parties — at least just for the next week — so don't go overboard.

Are pubs and restaurants back open?

They certainly are.

Seated hospitality venues including restaurants, cafes, food courts and bars can go back to the pre-lockdown measures.

The casino will reopen while adhering to the two-square-metre rule, while nightclubs can open their doors again — provided they stick to the four-square-metre rule, with patrons wearing masks.

Can I go back to the gym?

Gyms, indoor fitness centres and dance studios may reopen, but will need to abide by mask requirements and the two-square-metre rule.

Spectators are also now permitted at community sports events.

On that note, the AFL western derby will proceed with a 75 per cent capacity crowd at Perth Stadium.

The 75 per cent capacity rule is in place for the other major stadiums, too.

Are weddings back on?

Weddings and funerals can go ahead with a maximum of 200 guests without requiring an exemption.

Meanwhile, outdoor gatherings with up to 500 people may be held without the need for a COVID event plan.

Certain entertainment venues with fixed seating, like theatres, concert halls, cinemas, comedy lounges and performing arts centres will be able to operate at 100 per cent capacity.

Is there compensation for businesses?

A number of small businesses suffered huge losses over the long weekend when they were forced to close.

The state government will be introducing a specific targeted grants program to provide some relief to those small businesses that have been impacted the most, such as those in the hospitality sector.

Grants of $2,000 will be available for businesses which meet the eligibility criteria.

"I know it might not be everything some businesses would want, but it is an acknowledgement of the impact and some support to assist," Mr McGowan said.

What about elective surgeries?

All elective surgeries will resume.

One household is permitted to visit a patient, per day, in a hospital, aged care or disability facility.

Anything I've missed?

There are a couple of other things that you might want to know.

Places of worship can reopen to 100 per cent capacity.

Meanwhile, beauty salons and hairdressers, and public venues — including community centres, libraries, museums, galleries and recreation centres — can open with the two-square-metre rule in place.

Universities can also resume in-person teaching.

How long will the rules be in place?

The new restrictions will be in place until 12:01am on Saturday, May 8.
