Liberal MP Andrew Laming lawyers up over reports he photographed a woman’s bottom - NEWS.com.au

Liberal MP Andrew Laming is lawyering up over reports he photographed a woman’s bottom and separately could be eligible for a $100,000 payout after he was dumped from preselection last night.

News.com.au understands that Dr Laming has engaged the same defamation lawyer representing former Attorney-General Christian Porter after weeks of bad headlines,

Sydney based defamation specialist Rebekah Giles.

Mr Porter is suing the ABC for defamation over reports of an alleged rape in 1988 that he completely denies.

Dr Laming has Channel Nine Brisbane in his sights over the original reports that the MP took a photo of a woman on her knees filling a bar fridge.

Dr Laming insists the photo, which he does not deny taking, was “completely dignified” but regardless he offered to delete it anyway.

Police considered a complaint by the woman but were quick to announce they didn’t plan to pursue charges opening the door for Mr Laming to pursue legal compensation.

Because the woman was wearing shorts and the photo was taken from a distance it didn’t meet the legal definition of “upskirting”.

Dr Laming has also been undergoing intensive counselling to get to the bottom of what’s been causing him problems in his interpersonal relationships.

But first, he is dealing from the fallout of being disendorsed by the LNPs on Monday night over allegations he insulted constituents on Facebook.

Dr Laming has offered an unqualified apology if he offended anyone.

There’s a silver lining, however, which is that it could now deliver Dr Laming a big payday.

He stands to pocket a taxpayer-funded “resettlement” payment of $105,600, or six months salary, after he was formally disendorsed by the LNP.

However any final ruling will be up to the Remuneration Tribunal.

Under the rules, a politician who “retires involuntarily” from parliament — including through loss of party endorsement or for reasons other than misconduct — may be eligible for the handout.

Dr Laming was contacted for comment.

He’s previously suggested he contested the Pre-selection battle simply to explain himself to Liberals and not because he changed his mind about quitting or planned to stand as a candidate.

Those close to him suggested he may also not ask for the $100,000 resettlement allowance. But it could prove tempting as he prepares to bring down the curtain on his political career.
