Defence Minister Peter Dutton says he has made it "very clear" to the Navy that a dance performance at a recent ship commissioning will never happen again.
Key points:
- Mr Dutton told Channel Nine the dance "wasn't a good look"
- The scantily clad group performed a routine that included twerking
- Women's Minister Marise Payne says it is time everyone "moved on" from the dance
The performance on Saturday at the formal launching of the Navy's newest $2 billion ship HMAS Supply was widely criticised as inappropriate.
The decision last weekend to invite a local group of scantily clad dancers to perform a routine that included twerking caused annoyance inside federal government ranks.
Speaking on Channel Nine today, Mr Dutton confirmed there would be no kind of similar routines in future.
"It wasn't a good look, Karl [Stefanovic]," he said.
"I'm sorry to you and Richard [Marles] and others who've enjoyed the footage, but you won't see that again in a ship launch."
The Defence Minister made the comment during his regular appearance on The Today Show with deputy Labor leader Richard Marles, while all three men joked and laughed about the performance.
Former defence minister and current Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne said organisers were trying to work within the local community but needed to evaluate if it was the right way to go at other events.
"I think it is important, given the responses and the concerns that have been raised, that the Defence organisers have a look at this and decide what’s appropriate in the future," she said.
The Sydney dance troupe who performed at the event have blamed coverage by the ABC and other media for making them feel "threatened" and "unsafe", after footage of the routine went viral.
The ABC initially published a video including vision of the Governor-General and Chief of Navy but later clarified they were not present for the performance.
The Chief of Defence, General Angus Campbell, was present and watched the routine.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison would not comment on whether he believed the dance routine was appropriate or not.
"I am disappointed that this event was so misreported," he said.
"I think was very dishonest and I think standards have failed.
"I think obviously Defence will look at these matters and make whatever changes they wish to in the future. I will leave that to them."
