The 10-year-old boy is a sibling of another young Queenslander who tested positive to the virus last week.
A southeast Queensland child has tested positive to Covid-19, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has confirmed.
The 10-year-old boy is the brother of a four-year-old who tested positive last week, linked to a Beenleigh childcare centre.
The Beenleigh cluster originated after a truck driver, who contracted the virus in NSW, spent time in the Logan/Beenleigh community while infectious.
The driver spread it to a coworker and her four-year-old daughter, prompting hundreds of people linked to the childcare centre into isolation.
Ms Palaszczuk said she was not concerned now that the brother given the child had been in home quarantine.
Chief health officer Jeannette Young thanked the 100 families linked to the childcare centre who are still in quarantine.
“This is what we want to see in an outbreak, that any new cases that come forward – and there’s an ongoing risk we’ll get more cases – that any of those additional cases are in quarantine at the time they’re detected, and they’ve spent their entire infectious period in quarantine,” Dr Young said.
“Which this child was. So there is no risk here at all.
“Now, what we need to go going forward is we’ve got to all get vaccinated.”
Ms Palaszczuk and Dr Young both faced questioning over whether Queensland would ease its strict border with NSW if Gladys Berejiklian announces an easing of lockdown in some parts of the state.
It’s anticipated the mid-north coast, north coast, some parts of the Riverina and the Murrumbidgee region could be released from lockdown from this weekend.
Dr Young said she wanted to wait and see what the plans were before an announcement was made on Queensland’s border position.
“It’s critical (to wait and see),” Dr Young said.
“It’s the state where people are that can make the best decision about what the risks are.”
