Queensland records five new locally acquired cases of COVID-19, Annastacia Palaszczuk says no lockdown for now - ABC News

Queensland has recorded five new locally acquired cases of COVID-19, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced.

The Premier said the state would not enter lockdown at this time.

All five cases are all from the same family across two households, one in Moorooka and the other in Sunnybank.

A 13-year-old girl who goes to St Thomas More College at Sunnybank in Brisbane's south tested positive yesterday, but is being counted in today's figures.

Her mother, a staff member at Griffith University's Nathan campus, also tested positive late last night.

Chief health Officer Jeannette Young said although the woman went to work at the university, she saw very few people.

"The mother did go to work at the Nathan campus at Griffith University on Wednesday but saw very few people, so we were quite comfortable there," she said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the situation would be "closely monitored".

"There is no lockdown today, but I will say this over the next 24 or 48 hours we'll be closely monitoring the situation," she said.

Queensland Health has released a list of exposure including sites in Sunnybank, Rocklea and Acacia Ridge.

Three overseas acquired cases have also been recorded.

Girl tested due to headache, Delta detected

The source of the infection is still unknown, but health authorities believe it came from a man who visited one of the households from New South Wales.

The young girl who tested positive presented with a headache.

Dr Young confirmed it was the Delta strain of COVID-19.

"Can I just commend that mother. So, her daughter had a headache …  to have immediately gone out and got her daughter tested, and her daughter's tested positive, to get that so quickly means we can respond by just asking people to do what they've been doing so well," she said.

Dr Young said the cases were not connected to any existing cluster but were linked to cases in New South Wales.

"It's not linked to the Indooroopilly outbreak and it's not linked to the recent Beenleigh outbreak that we're still managing, the best that we can see is it's linked to cases in New South Wales," she said.

Authorities are urging Queenslanders to be cautious this weekend in light of the recent cases.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the next 24-48 hours were "critical".

"Please mask up going indoors, register, and anyone who has any symptoms whatsoever, please go and get tested," she said.
