Tragic detail in vaxxed man’s Covid death - NEWS.com.au

A fully vaccinated man has died with Covid-19 after acquiring his infection in a devastating way, as 1288 new cases are recorded in NSW.

A man in his 70s who was fully vaccinated was among seven people who died with Covid-19 overnight, as NSW recorded 1288 new locally acquired cases.

Tragically, chief health officer Kerry Chant revealed the man had become infected with the virus while in hospital for another illness, making him the 12th death linked to an outbreak at Liverpool Hospital.

“He had received both doses of a vaccination however he did have significant underlying health conditions,” she said.

The other deaths were:

  • A man in his 80s from south-western Sydney died at Campbelltown Hospital.
  • A woman in her 80s from south-western Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital.
  • A man in his 70s from south-western Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital. He acquired his infection at the hospital and is the 12th death linked to this outbreak.
  • A man in his 80s from Sydney’s north died at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. He acquired his infection at the hospital.
  • A man in his 50s from south-western Sydney died at Royal North Shore Hospital
  • A man in his 80s from south-western Sydney died at St George Hospital.
  • A woman in her 70s from south-western Sydney died in Campbelltown Hospital.

Dr Chant said there were currently 160 people in intensive care, 64 of whom require ventilation.

Ominously, NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian reiterated that October would be even worse for infections and deaths.

There was some hope among the bad news though, with Ms Berejiklian revealing 70 per cent of the eligible population had received their first dose of the vaccine, and announcing a slight easing of restrictions for Sydney’s areas of concern.

She said the state was projected to hit 70 per cent of the adult population fully vaccinated in mid-October, at which point NSW would have to learn to accept Covid-19 cases and some deaths like other endemic illnesses such as Influenza.

“The sad reality is outside of a pandemic, we lose between 600 and 800 people every year to the flu,” she said.

“We have to put things into perspective. Nobody likes to talk about this because it is confronting.

“But we have to get back to living life as normal as possible, knowing that COVID is among us.

“You start normalising living with COVID when you have high rates of vaccination, when you have a lower rates of people going into hospital, the case numbers are less relevant but you are going to have death.”

Of Thursday’s 1288 cases, 445 were from western Sydney, 387 were from southwest Sydney, 149 were from Sydney, 101 were from southeast Sydney, 82 were from Nepean/Blue Mountains and 31 were from northern Sydney.

Meanwhile, residents living in Sydney’s 12 LGAs of concern have had exercise restrictions lifted.

The LGAs are Bayside, Blacktown, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool, Parramatta, Strathfield and some suburbs of Penrith.

Residents in those areas will no longer be limited to one hour of exercise per day. From 5am Friday, there will be no limits on the amount of time they can spend exercising outdoors.

However, the 9pm-5am curfew will remain in place.
