Speaking from Milton in Brisbane, reporter Jessica Millward said the first round of storms have begun in south-east Queensland.
A severe storm warning has been issued for Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, and Sunshine Coast.
"There is thunder, lightning and a severe storm warning," she told Today.
"For Brisbane today we expected around 100mm (of rain), very strong winds and possibly large-sized hail as the rain starts to come down here in Milton.
"Don't underestimate how unnerving this sound will be for the flood victims here in Brisbane. They've told me over the past few days they think next time they hear rain, their heart is going to sink."
